Running for Ruth 5K Raises CMV Awareness

OWENSBORO, Ky. — The Strides4CMV Running for Ruth 5K brought runners and walkers together Saturday morning to raise awareness for congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) and honor the memory of Ruth Wells. Participants were greeted with ideal conditions, including 72-degree temperatures, clear skies, and full sun along the Greenbelt course.

The event was created by Madison and James Wells following the loss of their daughter, Ruth, who passed away in June 2024 at just seven months old after a battle with congenital CMV. Through the Running for Ruth 5K and partnership with Strides4CMV, the family continues working to raise awareness and support research, education, and prevention efforts surrounding the virus.

Due to a late course adjustment, the race started near Precious Blood Catholic Church and followed an out-and-back route along the Greenbelt to the Joe Ford Nature Center before returning to the finish line.

OBKY Sports was invited to attend the event and capture photographs throughout the morning, and we were honored to be a part of such a meaningful community event.

Travis Roby of Whitesville claimed the overall men’s title with a winning time of 16:27. Landon Thompson of Owensboro finished second in 16:32.1, followed by Maurice Hanley of Evansville, Indiana, in third at 17:25.6.

On the women’s side, Makenzie Ross of Owensboro earned the overall victory with a time of 17:56.7. Avery Nelson of Dayton, Ohio, placed second in 22:27.4, while Ashley Patton of Owensboro finished third in 23:33.3.
