Brescia Keeps Freed-Hardeman Off the Scoreboard in 1-0 Win

OWENSBORO, KY — One goal was all Brescia needed Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats got it from sophomore Ana Victorica in the 11th minute and then spent the rest of the afternoon protecting the advantage, earning a 1-0 victory over Freed-Hardeman at Kamuf Park.

Victorica created the game’s only breakthrough when she finished a chance assisted by senior Allana Colen Porto, giving Brescia a 1-0 lead at 10:57.

Freed-Hardeman had an opportunity to answer shortly afterward, but Brescia goalkeeper Laura Thompson stopped Abby Schwarz’s shot in the 10th minute. Thompson made another save in the second half on a shot from Cash Harris.

Brescia continued to create chances of its own, with Victorica, Kaja Zupanic, Manu Santos and Colen Porto among those testing the Freed-Hardeman defense.

The second half became a test of whether the Bearcats could protect the narrow lead.

Freed-Hardeman continued pushing forward late, earning several corner kicks and getting shots from Morakane Mokhothu, Marta Martin and Isabel Croke. Brescia’s defense kept the Colonels from finding an equalizer, and the early goal ultimately proved to be enough.

Thompson finished with two saves for Brescia, while Freed-Hardeman goalkeeper Maria Paz Mora Silva recorded seven saves.

The victory moves Brescia to 2-2-0 on the season, while Freed-Hardeman drops to 0-3-0.

For Brescia, the afternoon came down to making one early opportunity count and then refusing to give Freed-Hardeman a way back into the match.
