Owensboro Devils Roll Into Regional Final With 8-0 Win, Set Program Wins Record

OWENSBORO, KY — Owensboro High School is playing its best soccer at the most important point of the season, and the Devils added another milestone Tuesday night.

Owensboro overwhelmed Meade County 8–0 at Deer Park Field, triggering the mercy rule with 22:18 remaining after a second-half surge put the match out of reach. The Devils combined precise passing, pressure in the attacking third and contributions from across the lineup to secure their place in Thursday’s 2026 Third Region Boys Soccer Championship.

The victory also marked Owensboro’s 22nd win of the season, setting a new program record for wins in a season, according to head coach Ryan Haley. Haley said the previous mark was 21 wins, which he believed was set by the 1988 team.

For the Devils, the result was more than a convincing postseason victory. It was another sign of a team building momentum as it prepares for a regional title showdown with Ohio County.

A Patient Start Opens the Door

Owensboro created chances early, but Meade County initially made the Devils work to find their rhythm.

The Green Waves lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, a look Haley said his team does not often face. The shape gave Meade County width and required Owensboro to adjust its approach in the midfield.

Once the Devils found openings, their passing began to take over.

Japheti Bavento set up Luke Wilborn for the opening goal at 29:47 in the first half. Peter Mbayo then assisted Filip Smekal at 26:44 before Kennedy Payne found Mbayo for another finish at 25:44.

Valor Smith connected with Mbayo at 19:33, and Smith later assisted Smekal at 6:03 to send Owensboro into halftime with a commanding 5–0 lead.

Haley said he was especially pleased with the team’s ability to move the ball through the middle of the field rather than relying exclusively on wide attacks.

“We love going out wide,” Haley said. “But when we go up the middle, we could just knock it around, and it’s just clever passing, back heels. Sometimes it shocks me.”

The coach credited the group’s talent and willingness to execute the style they have worked on throughout the season.

Second-Half Pressure Finishes the Job

Owensboro carried that attacking rhythm into the second half, adding three more goals without allowing Meade County to get back into the match.

Smith set up Mbayo at 38:14, giving the Devils another goal through a combination that had already produced results in the opening half. Bilombele Ekyochi then assisted Noah Knoop at 29:20, and the pair connected again at 22:18 to complete the scoring.

The final goal triggered the mercy rule, ending the match with Owensboro ahead 8–0.

The scoring was spread across the lineup, with Mbayo and Smekal each recording two goals, while Knoop added two in the second half. Smith contributed a goal and multiple assists, helping drive the Devils’ attack throughout the night.

Owensboro finished with 27 shots on goal across the two halves, compared with four for Meade County. The Devils also earned eight corner kicks.

Haley said he was pleased with the performance, including the effort from players who entered later in the match.

“We pulled some guys there the last 20 or so, and even those guys were pushing the envelope,” Haley said. “We’ve got a good young group of kids as well. Super proud of them.”

Despite the final margin, Haley also praised Meade County for competing rather than sitting back defensively.

“I thought they fought very hard,” he said. “They came out and played us straight up, and I like that. I respect that. It’s more soccer that way.”

A Record-Setting Season for the Devils

Tuesday’s win gave Owensboro its 22nd victory of the season, establishing a new program record for wins in a single season.

Haley said the previous record was 21 wins, which he believed the 1988 team had achieved. He added that setting the record was not a specific goal the team had pursued during the season.

“It wasn’t something we were going for, it just happened,” Haley said.

The milestone reflects the consistency Owensboro has shown throughout the campaign. The Devils have continued winning as the postseason has progressed, and Tuesday’s performance showed the depth and attacking variety that have helped them reach the regional final.

The record is now theirs, but the season still has a bigger opportunity ahead.

One More Test Against Ohio County

Owensboro’s next challenge will be Ohio County in Thursday night’s Third Region championship at Deer Park Field.

The Eagles enter the matchup after defeating Daviess County 3–2 in Tuesday’s semifinal, scoring the decisive goal in the 79th minute after the Panthers had rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie the game. The victory sent Ohio County to the regional final for the first time in program history.

Haley knows the Eagles present a serious challenge. He specifically pointed to Jaden Sandria, J.J. Pacheco, Journey Bowlds and goalkeeper Kayden Sandria as players who can make a difference.

“Jaden Sandria is an exceptional player. Dangerous, as can be,” Haley said, adding that Ohio County has several other strong contributors.

Haley said Owensboro’s players were not overlooking the Eagles, regardless of which opponent they had preferred to face in the final.

“It should be a heck of a game because they’re going to bring a fight,” he said.

Both teams now have a chance to turn strong seasons into a regional championship. Owensboro brings a program-record 22 wins and an eight-goal performance into the matchup, while Ohio County arrives after surviving a late semifinal comeback.

Thursday will determine which team claims the Third Region title and advances to the next stage of the postseason.
