Owensboro made a powerful statement in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs, cruising to a 62-7 victory over Grayson County at Rash Stadium on Friday night.
The Red Devils (9-2) wasted no time asserting their dominance, with senior running back Evan Hampton leading the charge. Hampton rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns on just five carries, providing an early spark for Owensboro’s explosive offense. In addition to the offensive fireworks, the Owensboro defense was equally impressive, with Eli Hampton returning an interception for a touchdown, further highlighting the Red Devils’ all-around control.
Owensboro’s offense was quick to strike, as the Red Devils opened the game with a fast-paced, efficient drive. Evan Hampton’s 25-yard touchdown run put Owensboro on the board just minutes into the first quarter, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Following a quick defensive stop, Owensboro found the end zone again—this time, Hampton broke off a 40-yard run to extend the lead to 14-0.
The Red Devils’ offense didn’t slow down. Quarterback Jake McKee connected with Keenan Kuhlman on a 20-yard touchdown pass, and with less than a minute left in the first quarter, Hampton completed his hat trick with a 30-yard touchdown run to give Owensboro a commanding 28-0 lead.
Grayson County, struggling to move the ball, found themselves overwhelmed by Owensboro’s defense. In the second quarter, Eli Hampton picked off a pass and raced 45 yards to the end zone, further burying the Cougars and pushing the lead to 35-0. With Owensboro in full control, the first half ended with the Red Devils up 49-0, and the game all but decided.
In the second half, Owensboro’s second-string players got their chance to shine. Backup quarterback Braylon Bush connected with Mason Butler for a touchdown, and James Williams added another rushing score as the Red Devils extended their lead to 62-0.
Grayson County managed to avoid the shutout late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Jake Davis found Caleb Brown for a 25-yard touchdown, but it was too little, too late as Owensboro had already locked up the dominant win.
Defensively, Owensboro put on a clinic, with linebackers Cole Brown and defensive linemen Hayden Beasley and Isaiah Johnson consistently pressuring Grayson County’s offense. The Hampton brothers were also key contributors, with Eli’s pick-six and his overall playmaking ability standing out throughout the game.
“Great effort all around from our team tonight,” said Owensboro head coach Chris Peterson. “We took care of business early, and I’m proud of how our guys executed. But we know the competition is only going to get tougher from here, so we’ll focus on what we can control and keep improving.”
Next up, Owensboro will face a new challenge in the second round of the playoffs. Peterson knows his team needs to stay sharp. “This is just one step,” he added. “We’ll enjoy this win, but we know there’s a long road ahead. We’ll get back to work and prepare for what’s next.”
With their dominant performance, the Red Devils have proven they are ready for a deep postseason run, and with playmakers like Evan Hampton and a lockdown defense, they’re well-positioned for the challenges ahead.
