Owensboro continued its postseason roll Friday night, controlling the game from the opening minutes on the way to a 42–14 victory over Greenwood in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs at Rash Stadium. The Red Devils (10–2) used a fast start, a lockdown defensive performance, and big plays on both sides of the ball to secure their spot in next week’s quarterfinal matchup with Fairdale.
The tone was set almost immediately. Just two plays into Greenwood’s opening drive, defensive back Jalen Carr read the quarterback perfectly and came down with an interception that ignited the home crowd. The turnover paid off instantly—two snaps later, Kingston Dillard caught a pass in stride and turned upfield, racing 40 yards to the end zone to give Owensboro an early advantage.
That early punch established a rhythm the Red Devils never let go of. Owensboro poured in 21 points in the first quarter, attacking with a balanced offensive approach that kept the Gators off balance and on their heels. Greenwood managed to respond with a touchdown of its own in the opening frame, but the Red Devils’ defense tightened quickly and shut down any hopes of momentum.
Owensboro extended its lead in the second quarter, going into halftime up 28–7 after another efficient drive capped with a score. Defensively, the Red Devils swarmed to the ball, limited big plays, and pressured the pocket consistently. Whenever the offense needed a spark, the defense delivered—just as it has throughout much of the season.
In the third quarter, Owensboro added another touchdown while again holding Greenwood to minimal gains, pushing the lead to 35–14 entering the final period. The Red Devils closed out the night with a steady, controlled fourth quarter that included another touchdown and multiple defensive stops, sealing the 42–14 victory.
Head Coach Chris Peterson praised his team’s focus and ability to capitalize on early opportunities.
“Getting a takeaway that early changes the entire flow of the game,” Peterson said. “Our guys came out ready, executed the game plan, and answered every challenge. That’s the type of football you have to play this time of year.”
Peterson also emphasized the importance of consistency as the Red Devils prepare for the next round.
“We know each week gets tougher,” he said. “We’ll enjoy this one tonight, but our focus turns to Fairdale right away. It’s about staying disciplined, sharpening the small things, and continuing to play together.”
With back-to-back playoff wins and a defense that continues to deliver momentum-shifting plays, Owensboro heads into the quarterfinals looking every bit like a team capable of another deep postseason run.
