Owensboro Catholic’s home crowd endured one of the most dramatic finishes of the Kentucky postseason Friday night, as the Aces edged Beechwood 41–40 in a tense 2A semifinal at Steele Stadium.
Protecting a seven-point lead in the closing moments, Catholic’s defense appeared to seal the win when Beechwood’s final pass of regulation hit the turf. Officials, however, called defensive pass interference, extending the game with one untimed down. The Tigers took another shot at the end zone and came up empty again—but a holding flag moved the ball even closer, setting up a third do-or-die play from the 5-yard line.
This time, Beechwood capitalized. Quarterback Emmett Queen connected with Brody Aylor in the end zone, halting the stadium in stunned silence as the Tigers pulled within a single point.
With the season hanging in the balance, the game came down to Beechwood’s decision on the conversion attempt—a choice that ultimately determined Owensboro Catholic’s return trip to the Class 2A state championship.
