Apollo's Record-Setting Season Reaches Its Final Match at State Tournament

OWENSBORO, KY — Apollo’s volleyball season came to a close Monday night in the opening round of the KHSAA State Tournament, but the final score was only one part of a season filled with accomplishments, growth and memories for the E-Gals.
Facing a Bowling Green team that entered with a 33-7 record, Apollo battled through a dramatic opening set and stayed within reach in the third before the Purples secured a 27-25, 25-16, 25-21 victory at Apollo High School.
The Eagles entered the state tournament at 37-4-1 after capturing their second consecutive District 9 and 3rd Region championships. They reached the state stage through another successful season built on contributions from throughout the roster, with players earning recognition, reaching career milestones and setting program records along the way.

Apollo Pushes Bowling Green in the Opening Set
The Eagles gave Bowling Green a challenge from the start, building an advantage in the opening set and holding the lead until the score reached 20.
From there, the teams traded points in a tight finish. Apollo continued to compete for every point, but Bowling Green eventually pulled ahead to take the set 27-25.
The Purples carried that momentum into the second set, winning 25-16 to move within one set of advancing.
Apollo responded in the third. The Eagles stayed with Bowling Green deep into the set, keeping the match competitive before the Purples closed out the 25-21 win.
Although the match ended in three sets, Apollo’s fight in the opening and closing sets reflected the determination that helped the Eagles put together another championship season.
A Senior Class That Helped Build Apollo’s Success
Monday also marked the final match for five Apollo seniors: Maddi Roberts, Savannah Denson, Kinsley Jackson, Addy Kirby and Avery Gray.

Each played a part in a program that captured back-to-back district and regional championships. Their contributions, along with those of their teammates, helped establish a standard of success that will carry forward beyond this season.
Roberts became Apollo’s all-time career assists leader, surpassing Ahalia Ramirez’s previous record of 1,937 assists, set from 2020 through 2023. She added 21 assists against Bowling Green, continuing a career that helped direct the Eagles’ offense.
Gray’s senior season brought another collection of accomplishments. She broke Apollo’s career kills record and surpassed 1,000 career digs. She was also named KVCA Region 3 Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and earned a place on the 2026 3rd Region Volleyball All-Tournament Team alongside teammates Jessie Pate, Keelan Wettstain and Maddi Roberts, after helping Apollo win its second straight regional championship.
The accomplishments extended beyond the senior class. Jessie Pate, for example, established Apollo’s career records in digs and aces during the season. She also reached the 1,000-career-digs milestone, adding another achievement to a season filled with individual progress across the roster.
Those are just a few examples of the records and milestones Apollo players reached throughout the year. The team’s success was reflected not only in its championship results, but also in the individual development and accomplishments of players throughout the program.
The recognition extended to the coaching staff as well. Head coach Mary Howard earned KVCA Region 3 Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season, joining Gray in receiving back-to-back regional recognition.
A Team Effort Through the Final Point
Apollo’s final match featured contributions across the lineup, with players working to keep the Eagles competitive against a strong Bowling Green team.

Gray led Apollo with 12 kills, while Keelan Wettstain added four and Denson finished with three. Jackson contributed two kills.
Roberts recorded 21 assists and 12 digs, helping organize the Eagles’ offense throughout the match. Pate led the team with 13 digs, followed by Roberts with 12, Lyla Fortener with nine and Gray with seven. Wettstain added five digs, while Sophia Mason recorded two.
Apollo also recorded three service aces, with one each from Pate, Roberts and Gray. At the net, Wettstain had two blocks, while Gray and Denson each added one.
The numbers provide a final look at the individual contributions in Monday’s match, but they represent only one part of what made Apollo successful throughout the season. The Eagles relied on players filling different roles, supporting one another and contributing to a team that continued to find ways to win.

A Season Defined by Back-to-Back Championships
