OWENSBORO, KY — Owensboro Catholic handed Owensboro its first loss of the season Tuesday night, holding on for a 2-1 victory in a rivalry matchup at Owensboro Catholic High School.

The Aces struck first early in the match when senior defender Chloe Marston finished a chance with an assist from senior Allie Marston.

Owensboro Catholic carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

The Aces added to their lead in the second half when Allie Marston found the back of the net with an assist from sophomore Jenna Brey, giving Catholic a 2-0 advantage.

Owensboro answered late.

Junior Lily Nieman scored with an assist from freshman Trinity Johnson, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining.

The Devils continued to push, but Owensboro Catholic held on to preserve the one-goal victory.

Owensboro coach Sarah Poole said she believed her team controlled much of the match despite the result.

“We held better possession. I thought we played harder,” Poole said.

Poole said Owensboro created enough control in the match but struggled to turn that possession into shots.

“We just, for some reason, couldn’t get shots off tonight,” she said.

Owensboro Catholic goalkeeper recorded two saves, while Owensboro junior goalkeeper Hayley Sikes made four saves to keep the Devils within striking distance.

The loss was Owensboro’s first of the season after opening the year 4-0. Owensboro Catholic improved to 3-0.
