The No. 2 seed Apollo High School showed exactly why resilience matters in tournament baseball Sunday, overcoming a five-run first inning from Owensboro High School to storm back for an 11-5 win in the 9th District semifinals at the Owensboro High School Athletic Complex.

Owensboro came out swinging and landed the first punch, scoring five runs in the opening inning behind a string of early hits, including RBI contributions from Jordan Quesnell, Jaxon Fogle, Brody Glenn, and Hayden McBride. The Red Devils seized immediate control and looked poised to set the tone.

But Apollo didn’t panic.

Instead, the Eagles answered in waves.

Relief pitcher Isaac James stabilized the game after the rocky start, keeping Owensboro from extending the lead and giving Apollo time to respond. That response came fast in the second inning, when the Eagles matched the five-spot with one of their own.

Ace Lillpop got the rally started with an RBI single before Ross Milburn delivered the biggest swing of the inning—a two-run double that erased the deficit. Gunnar Hendricks added to the damage as Apollo tied the game 5-5 and completely flipped momentum.

Milburn wasn’t done.

He pushed Apollo into the lead in the third inning with another RBI single, giving the Eagles their first advantage at 6-5.

From there, Apollo separated.

In the fifth inning, the Eagles delivered the knockout blow, scoring five more runs on a steady mix of timely hits. Geordyn Stevens, Ty Lillpop, Hendricks, and Ryleigh Logan all contributed RBIs as Apollo stretched the lead to double digits and closed the door.

Ross Milburn finished as the offensive engine, going 3-for-4 with a double and multiple key RBI swings in the comeback. Apollo finished with 13 hits and worked six walks, consistently extending innings and wearing down Owensboro pitching.

On the mound, Isaac James delivered the performance of the game. The right-hander worked six innings, striking out six while allowing just four hits and settling the game after the early chaos.

For Owensboro, the early explosion wasn’t enough to offset missed opportunities later in the game. The Red Devils finished with nine hits, with McBride driving in two runs and Eli Hampton, Fogle, and Glenn each contributing multi-hit efforts in a strong offensive start that faded as Apollo’s pitching and momentum took over.

With the win, Apollo advances to the 9th District championship where they will meet Owensboro Catholic High School. Both teams will move on to the 3rd Region Tournament, but first, a district title—and bragging rights in Owensboro—are on the line.
