Owensboro Catholic Gives Apollo a Fight Before Eagles Advance to District Championship

OWENSBORO, KY — Apollo entered Monday night’s 9th District Girls Volleyball Tournament with a 32-3 record and championship expectations. Owensboro Catholic had no interest in making the Eagles’ path an easy one.

The Aces brought their A game, pushing Apollo through four sets in the district tournament opener and delivering a surprise in the second set that changed the feel of the match. Apollo took the opening set comfortably, but Catholic answered with a 25-23 win of its own. The Eagles had to regroup, and they did — winning the next two sets to secure a 3-1 victory and advance to Wednesday’s district championship.

Apollo started strong, taking the first set 25-11. With a record like the Eagles’ entering tournament play, a quick finish might have seemed possible. Catholic had a different answer. The Aces raised their level and stayed in the fight, earning a 25-23 second-set win that showed they were ready for the moment.

That response deserved attention. Catholic came into the match with an 11-20 record, but the Aces didn’t play like a team content simply to be in the tournament. They challenged one of the area’s top teams and made Apollo earn its place in the championship match.

The Eagles answered in the third set, winning 25-18 to regain the lead. They then closed out the match with a 25-14 fourth-set victory, finding the consistency they needed after Catholic’s push. Apollo’s win also secured the Eagles a place in the 3rd Region Tournament.

Avery Gray led Apollo’s attack with 24 kills and added two blocks. Keelan Wettstain contributed 11 kills and a block, while Savannah Denson finished with eight kills and two blocks. Kinsley Jackson added five kills and two blocks as Apollo spread production across its front line.

Maddi Roberts directed the offense with 47 assists and added four service aces. Jessie Pate chipped in three aces and led the Eagles with 28 digs, while Wettstain finished with 16 digs. The defensive work helped Apollo steady itself after Catholic took the second set and keep the Aces from carrying that momentum through the rest of the match.

Owensboro Catholic had several strong individual performances of its own. Marilla led the Aces with nine kills, Quinn added eight, and Emmy recorded five kills and three blocks. Emma finished with two kills and two blocks, while Payton anchored the back row with 23 digs. Quinn added eight digs, and Ryleigh had nine.

Aubrey led Catholic with 14 assists, with Abi contributing eight. The Aces’ second-set win was more than a line on the scoreboard; it reflected a team that came ready to compete and made Apollo adjust before the Eagles could close out the match.

Apollo will face Daviess County in the 9th District Championship on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Daviess County High School Gym. The Eagles will look to carry their momentum into the title match as they compete for the district championship.
