Owensboro Opens Playoffs with Convincing 42-6 Win Over Greenwood

OWENSBORO, KY — The Owensboro Red Devils took control early and never let go Thursday night, turning a dominant defensive performance and an efficient offensive attack into a 42-6 victory over Greenwood in the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs at Rash Stadium.

Owensboro scored on its opening possession and added another touchdown before the first quarter ended. By halftime, the Red Devils had built a 35-0 advantage, putting the game firmly in their control.

The opening drive set the tone. After Kingston Dillard returned the kickoff 35 yards to midfield, Owensboro moved into Greenwood territory behind quarterback DeMarcus Ganaway Jr. Ganaway connected with Ayden Fountain for a key fourth-down conversion before finding Dillard for an 18-yard touchdown to cap the drive.

The Red Devils struck again after the defense forced Greenwood to turn the ball over on downs. A fumble recovery by Aiden Bullock gave Owensboro possession at the Greenwood 18, and Ty Ashley finished the short drive with a four-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0.

Ashley became the centerpiece of Owensboro’s ground attack, scoring all three of the team’s rushing touchdowns. His second came midway through the second quarter on a five-yard run, and he added a third just before halftime from one yard out.

Through the air, Ganaway helped keep the Greenwood defense on its heels. He completed 14 of 19 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Adyson Thomas for a 10-yard score early in the second quarter.

Thomas delivered one of the night’s biggest plays moments later, turning a pass into a 48-yard gain that helped set up Ashley’s second touchdown. Thomas finished with three catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Owensboro added another passing touchdown in the third quarter, this time with Tyson Biggs under center. Biggs completed all four of his pass attempts for 63 yards, including a 40-yard completion to Jamil Waddy and a 16-yard connection with Adonis Cawthrone. He capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown pass to Nolan Basham, extending the lead to 42-0.

The defensive performance was just as decisive. Greenwood managed only 59 total yards, including 17 through the air, and finished with seven first downs. The Red Devils forced three turnovers, including two fumble recoveries, and recorded six tackles for loss.

Greenwood’s only points came late in the fourth quarter. After Owensboro’s Deagan Howard fumbled at the Red Devils’ 47-yard line, Ryder Lambert recovered the ball and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. Greenwood’s two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the final score at 42-6.

Owensboro finished with 321 total yards, including 247 passing yards. Dillard led the receiving group with seven catches for 67 yards and a touchdown, while Ashley’s three scores highlighted the rushing attack.

After the game, head coach DaMarcus Ganaway Sr. credited his players for embracing the team’s message and bringing the urgency needed for playoff football.

“I’m proud of the way our guys came out and competed tonight. We challenged them all week to play with urgency and understand that nothing is guaranteed this time of year. Our theme was ‘We Are Built for This,’ and I thought the boys embraced that mindset. We still have things to clean up, but we’re grateful for another opportunity to get better and earn another week together.”

The win sends the Red Devils into the second round of the Class 5A playoffs, where they will face the winner of Friday night’s matchup between Graves County and Barren County. Owensboro is scheduled to host the second-round game Friday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m.
