The high school boys soccer season opened Monday night with Apollo and Owensboro Catholic both taking the field, but the two local programs came away with very different results.

Henderson County 2, Apollo 1

Apollo opened its season at home with a 2-1 loss to Henderson County.

The varsity match, originally scheduled for 7 p.m., began around 7:30 after the junior varsity match was delayed because of the heat. The JV teams played to a scoreless draw.

Henderson County took the lead in the first half before Apollo answered to level the match. The Colonels responded with another goal and held on for the 2-1 victory.

Miles Pryor scored both of Henderson County’s goals, with Zehn Hazelwood and Jack Monroe each recording an assist.

Apollo will look to bounce back Thursday when the Eagles face Owensboro High School.

Owensboro Catholic 7, Warren East 0

Owensboro Catholic continued its fast start with a dominant 7-0 victory over Warren East at Independence Field.

The win moved the Aces to 2-0 on the season. Catholic opened the year Aug. 4 with a 4-1 victory over Webster County.

Through two games, Catholic has scored 11 goals while allowing just one.

Both local teams now turn their attention to their next matches as the early high school soccer season takes shape.
