
OWENSBORO, Ky. — Apollo High School boys soccer overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat Caldwell County 5-1 Saturday night at Apollo High School.
Caldwell County struck first when Laban Hawkins scored off an assist from Colin Turmero. The Tigers held the lead into halftime, but Apollo took control after the break, scoring five unanswered goals to close out the victory.
Freshman Brayane Ngakpongui led the Eagles with two goals, recording the first varsity goals of his career. Freshman Maja Lukakula also scored twice, marking the first varsity goals of her career.
Junior Ahmad Hanafi added Apollo’s fifth goal, bringing his career total to 15 goals.
Apollo also received assists from Maja Lukakula and Colton.
The victory moves Apollo to 1-2 on the season. It was also the Eagles’ third all-time meeting with Caldwell County, with Apollo winning all three matchups.
For Ngakpongui and Lukakula, Saturday night marked the beginning of their varsity scoring careers. For Hanafi, the goal added another milestone to his career as he reached 15 goals.
Apollo returns to action Tuesday, August 18, traveling to Hopkins County Central in Madisonville. The varsity match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Hopkins County Central enters the matchup at 0-2, with losses to Russellville and Trigg County. The Storm fell 6-1 to Russellville on August 4 before losing 6-0 to Trigg County on August 11.
