OWENSBORO, KY — Kentucky Wesleyan twice took the lead Thursday night, but Trevecca Nazarene answered each time before scoring the decisive goal in the 84th minute to hand the Panthers a 3-2 loss at Panther Field.

Kentucky Wesleyan got on the board first in the eighth minute when Emma Fields finished a chance set up by Marley Collins.

The Panthers continued to pressure Trevecca early, earning five corner kicks and creating several opportunities before the Trojans found an equalizer in the 17th minute. Elsa Bengtsson scored to make it 1-1.

Kentucky Wesleyan continued to generate chances before halftime, but Trevecca goalkeeper Mary Bauchou kept the match level with saves on Deca Burr, Haley Osborne and Kiera Tynes.

The Panthers regained the advantage in the 66th minute.

Collins carried the ball through midfield and finished a solo effort to put Kentucky Wesleyan ahead 2-1, giving the Panthers another lead with less than 25 minutes remaining.

Trevecca responded quickly again.

Noelle Garcia scored in the 70th minute off an assist from Bengtsson, tying the match at 2-2.

The Trojans then delivered the final blow in the 84th minute when Anny Mitra scored off Bengtsson’s assist, giving Trevecca its first lead of the night.

Kentucky Wesleyan continued to push for an equalizer in the closing minutes, but Bauchou made a save on Haylie Panter in the 87th minute to preserve the Trojans’ one-goal advantage.

The Panthers finished with a 14-9 edge in shots and put nine attempts on goal compared to six for Trevecca. Kentucky Wesleyan also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Collins finished with three points on a goal and an assist, while Fields recorded her first goal of the season.

The loss drops Kentucky Wesleyan to 0-4-0 on the season. Trevecca Nazarene improves to 2-0-1.

Kentucky Wesleyan opens Great Midwest Athletic Conference play Thursday, Sept. 10, hosting Lake Erie at Panther Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
