OWENSBORO, KY — Owensboro Catholic came out on top in a back-and-forth district battle Tuesday night, overcoming Owensboro in five sets, 25-17, 16-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-6, at the Owensboro High School.

The Aces took the opening set 25-17, but Owensboro answered immediately. The Red Devils evened the match with a 25-16 win in the second set before Catholic regained the lead with a 25-19 third-set victory.

Owensboro again forced a deciding set, taking the fourth 25-18. Catholic then separated itself in the fifth, closing out the match 15-6.

Quinn Best led Catholic’s attack with 12 kills, while Emmy Roberts added nine and Sadie Blair finished with eight. Marilla Kanipe contributed seven kills, with Emmelia Evans adding three and Emma Castlen one.

Aubrey Crowe recorded 23 assists to lead the Aces, while Abi Murphy added 15. Payton Arnold led Catholic with 17 digs, followed by Best with 14, Crowe with 12 and Murphy with 10.

For Owensboro, Ayrish Barksdale powered the offense with 19 kills. Anna Travis added seven, while Zoe Carter had four and Carsyn Cecil and Georgia Gabbert each finished with three.

Travis also recorded 27 assists and reached a major career milestone during the match, surpassing 2,000 career assists.

June Larsen led Owensboro’s defense with 27 digs, while Barksdale added 15. Paisley Martin had 11 digs, and Macey Kahn and Travis each finished with nine.

At the net, Travis recorded eight total blocks, including five solo blocks. Georgia Gabbert added seven total blocks, while Cecil finished with five.

The district win moves Catholic to 7-13 on the season, while Owensboro falls to 10-9.

Catholic will remain home Wednesday night when the Aces host South Warren at 7:30 p.m.

Owensboro will compete in the Lady Colonel Volleyball Classic on Oct. 2-3 at Henderson County North Middle School Gym.
