Owensboro Makes Statement With 5-0 Shutout of Murray

MURRAY, KY — Owensboro boys soccer went on the road Saturday morning for a matchup between two of the state’s stronger teams and came away with one of its most convincing results of the season.

The Red Devils defeated Murray 5-0 at the Mallary France Soccer Complex, improving to 17-1-1 while handing the Tigers, who entered at 14-2-2, just their third loss of the season.

Owensboro’s attack set the tone early, but the difference was its ability to turn pressure into goals without giving Murray an answer at the other end.

Japheti Bavento opened the scoring at 35:17, finishing a chance created by Filip Smekal. The Red Devils continued to press forward, and Peter Mbayo doubled the lead at 22:43 with Bavento providing the assist.

Owensboro added a third goal at 7:01 when Smekal finished a pass from Valor Smith, sending the Red Devils into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.

Murray needed a quick response coming out of the break, but Owensboro never gave the Tigers a chance to build momentum.

Mbayo scored his second goal at 30:47 to push the lead to 4-0. Smekal then capped the scoring at 13:22, completing his two-goal performance with an assist from Mbayo.

The offensive balance was a major part of the result. Smekal and Mbayo each scored twice, while Bavento added a goal. Four different Red Devils recorded assists.

At the other end, Owensboro’s defense delivered another clean sheet, keeping a Murray team that entered the match with a 14-2-2 record off the scoreboard for the full match.

The result gives Owensboro its 17th win of the season and another significant victory as the Red Devils continue toward the postseason.
