Daviess County Battles Elizabethtown Before Falling in Three Sets

OWENSBORO, KY — Daviess County volleyball opened Tuesday night by pushing one of Kentucky’s strongest teams to the limit, but Elizabethtown showed its depth and defensive strength after a tight first set to leave the Panthers’ gym with a 3-0 victory.
Elizabethtown entered the match with a 22-3 record and quickly showed why. Still, Daviess County refused to let the visitors have an easy start, staying within reach throughout the opening set before Elizabethtown edged the Panthers 26-24.
That opening set was the closest of the night. From there, Elizabethtown settled into a more controlled rhythm, taking the second set 25-18 before closing out the match 25-14.
The difference was not simply one player. Elizabethtown brought a balanced attack that produced 35 kills, with Maci Singleton and Haylee McAlister leading the way with nine kills apiece.
Anna Cammack added eight kills, while Charleigh Whelan finished with five and Kylee Dordor had four. Stella Janes directed the offense with 30 assists.
Elizabethtown also made its mark defensively, finishing with 86 digs and 10 blocks. Layla Newsome led the way with 20 digs, followed by Bailey Graham with 15 and Singleton with 13.
At the net, McAlister recorded five blocks, while Dordor had two solo blocks. Singleton and Stella Janes each added a solo block as Elizabethtown consistently made Daviess County work for points.
The visitors also finished with six service aces, helping them maintain pressure as the match progressed.
For Daviess County, the loss still featured several performances that stood out against a team that had lost only three matches entering the night.
Reese Whiteside led the Panthers with eight kills and seven blocks, giving Daviess County a strong presence at the net. Haylee Clark added seven kills, while Kallie Stanley and Molly Baughman each finished with four.
Daviess County’s head coach specifically highlighted Whiteside and Clark, saying the two “controlled the net” and were fun to watch.
Behind them, Lexi Jones turned in one of the night’s strongest defensive performances with 34 digs and three aces. Howard also credited Jones and the rest of the back row for stepping up against Elizabethtown’s attack.
Jenna Lawson helped run the offense with 11 assists and added five digs. Kyndal Murphy contributed 10 digs, while Maddie Chinn recorded three blocks.
The Panthers couldn’t turn the strong opening set into a match victory, but the 26-24 first-set battle showed the level of competition they faced against one of the state’s more successful teams.
Daviess County falls to 19-13 and will have more than a week before returning to action, traveling to Breckinridge County on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m.
Elizabethtown improves to 23-3 and immediately turns around for another Owensboro-area matchup, visiting Owensboro Catholic on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
