Aces Edge Apollo in Pitcher’s Duel to Claim 9th District Championship

The margin was razor-thin, the tension never let up, and in the end, it was the smallest of openings that decided everything.
The No. 10-ranked Owensboro Catholic High School baseball team claimed the 9th District championship Tuesday night, outlasting Apollo High School 2-1 in a classic pitcher’s duel at the Owensboro High School Athletic Complex.
Both teams punched their ticket to the 3rd Region Tournament, but only one walked away with hardware.
From the first inning, it was clear runs would be at a premium. Apollo starter Gage Logsdon and Catholic’s Lane Hundley locked in early, trading zeroes and controlling contact with minimal damage.
Hundley set the tone for Catholic, working into the fifth inning while allowing just one hit and striking out five. Apollo never found consistent rhythm against him, with early double-play balls killing momentum and limiting traffic on the bases.
Logsdon matched him step for step through the early innings, keeping Catholic off the board through three frames before the Aces finally broke through.
The breakthrough came in the fourth.
Alex Hood delivered the decisive swing, lining a single that brought home the game’s first run and gave Catholic a 1-0 edge in a game where every run felt amplified.
Catholic added a key insurance run in the fifth when Mason Moser grounded out to score Mason Russelburg, pushing the lead to 2-0 and shifting pressure entirely onto Apollo’s final at-bats.
Apollo refused to go quietly.
In the final inning, the Eagles loaded the bases and clawed a run across on a walk to Gunnar Hendricks, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and bringing the winning run to the plate.
But Catholic’s bullpen and defense held firm under pressure. Cal Murphy entered in relief and delivered in a moment built for nerves, working through chaos—including a game delay caused by a stadium lighting issue—to shut the door with the tying and winning runs in scoring position.
Murphy finished the job, preserving the one-run lead and sealing the district title.
Offensively, Mason Russelburg led Catholic with a perfect 2-for-2 performance, while Hood and Moser each drove in a run in a game defined more by execution than volume.
Defensively, both teams were sharp. Neither committed an error, and Apollo turned two double plays to keep itself within striking distance all night.
Apollo starter Logsdon kept the Eagles alive deep into the game, allowing just one run over 3.1 innings, while Catholic leaned on a pitching-by-committee approach to close out the win.
In the end, it wasn’t power or big innings that decided the 9th District—it was timing, execution, and one breakthrough swing in the fourth inning.
And that was enough for Catholic to take the crown.
