Apollo Boys Soccer Beats Owensboro Catholic 3-1, Wins Third Straight

OWENSBORO, Ky. — Apollo High School’s boys soccer team has officially turned its season around.

After opening the season 0–2, the Eagles have now won three consecutive games, capped by a 3–1 district victory over Owensboro Catholic on Thursday night at Apollo High School.

The win moved Apollo to 3–2 on the season and continued a surge that has changed the tone around the program after its difficult start.

The night also marked a significant milestone for senior midfielder Colton Anderson, who made his 50th career start for the Eagles.

Anderson said reaching the milestone was meaningful after growing up with the club and watching older players graduate before eventually becoming one of the team’s seniors himself.

Anderson celebrated the milestone by finding the back of the net, contributing one of Apollo’s three goals.

Freshman Maja Lukalula was another standout for the Eagles, producing a goal and two assists in an impressive all-around performance. Freshman Brayane Ngakpongui also scored, while junior Ahmad Hanafi added an assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nolan Perkins helped keep Apollo in control defensively with six saves.

For Apollo coach Nikos Agisilaou, the difference between the team’s opening two games and its current three-game winning streak has come down to confidence, trust and the ability to finish.

“I think the biggest takeaway from our wins is finishing games well,” Agisilaou said. “Building confidence in each other and trust in our teammates.”

The Eagles have also benefited from getting healthier.

“We had 2-3 guys out to start the year and that hurt our rotation when making adjustments,” Agisilaou said.

That added depth has been particularly important for a team that is still developing in several areas.

“This is a fun group but there’s still lots of soccer to play,” Agisilaou said. “We are very young in some spots and that makes it more special that they’re learning so quickly.”

Apollo now faces a challenging stretch on the schedule, with the Eagles set to travel to Murray High School on Saturday, Aug. 22, for a 12:45 p.m. kickoff.

The next two weeks will provide another test for an Apollo team that has gone from an 0–2 start to three straight wins.

“There’s still lots of soccer to play,” Agisilaou said. “Have a couple tough games coming in the next week or 2.”
