Apollo Claims Second Straight 3rd Region Volleyball Championship

OWENSBORO, KY — Two of the area’s top volleyball programs met Wednesday night with a regional championship on the line, and Apollo High School emerged with another title. The Eagles defeated Daviess County High School 3-0 to secure their second consecutive 3rd Region championship and advance to the state tournament.
Apollo won by set scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-9. Daviess County challenged the Eagles through the opening two sets before Apollo closed out the match, adding another chapter to a season in which the two programs have become familiar opponents.
The championship night also added another milestone to Apollo’s season. Senior Avery Gray and coach Mary Howard had already been named 3rd Region Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, marking the second consecutive season both earned those honors. Setter Maddi Roberts added to the celebration by breaking Apollo’s all-time career assists record.
Now, the Eagles turn their attention to a state tournament matchup against Bowling Green High School, the team responsible for Apollo’s first loss of the season.
Two Familiar Teams Meet for the Region Title
Wednesday’s championship carried extra meaning because Apollo and Daviess County had already faced each other during district play. Apollo won that meeting, giving Daviess County another opportunity to challenge its district opponent on the regional stage.
Both teams brought familiarity with the other’s strengths into the matchup. Daviess County’s defense made Apollo work for points, while the Eagles relied on their attacking options and defensive adjustments to maintain control.
Gray led Apollo with 11 kills and two blocks. Keelan Wettstain contributed seven kills, an ace and a block, while Savannah Denson added five kills. Ali Lawson recorded five kills and four blocks, and Kinsley Jackson finished with two kills and a block.
Roberts directed the offense with 30 assists, helping Apollo distribute the ball across the front row. Gray served three aces, while Wettstain, Jessie Pate and Sophia Mason each added an ace.
Howard pointed to Apollo’s play at the net as a key factor, along with the team’s adjustments against Daviess County’s varied attack.
“They have a lot of different attackers and they’re good at hitting the corner shots,” Howard said. “We had to adjust our blocking a little bit and positioning, but I thought our girls adjusted well.”
Daviess County Keeps the Early Sets Competitive
Daviess County gave Apollo a challenge in the opening set, with the Eagles earning a 25-21 decision. The second set remained competitive as the teams worked through another stretch of closely contested points.
Howard acknowledged that Apollo’s serving was not as consistent as she wanted in the second set, making it harder for the Eagles to build the runs they typically seek. Still, Apollo found a way to finish the set, winning 25-19 and moving within one set of the championship.
The opening two sets reflected the familiarity between the programs. Daviess County’s defensive effort required Apollo to remain patient, and the Eagles had to make adjustments rather than rely on a quick start to carry them through the match.
For Howard, the response also reflected the confidence her team has developed over two seasons of success.
“We may be down, but we’re never out,” Howard said.
Apollo carried that mindset into the third set. During a timeout, Howard said she encouraged the players to focus on the point in front of them instead of looking too far ahead. The Eagles followed that approach and won the set 25-9 to finish the match and claim the regional championship.
Gray Adds Another Honor to a Championship Season
Gray entered the regional championship already recognized as the 3rd Region Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Howard also repeated as Coach of the Year, extending a run of recognition for both the senior standout and the coach leading Apollo’s program.
Gray said repeating as regional champion brought pressure after last year’s title, but the team embraced the challenge of trying to reach that level again.
“It feels amazing because I feel like that’s a big pressure that a lot of teams have after doing one year,” Gray said. “I wanted to try to meet that again, and we did it, so I’m so happy.”
She also said this year’s championship felt especially exciting because Apollo faced a familiar district opponent. As a senior, Gray wanted to finish her final season with another regional title.
But she was quick to share the credit with her teammates.
“It means a lot to me and my team because I couldn’t do it without my team,” Gray said. “It just shows how hard work can do amazing things.”
Howard praised the seniors for establishing a standard that extends beyond the court. She said their leadership has helped younger players feel included, from their approach to practices to team meals and the relationships they have built throughout the season.
For Howard, that culture has become part of the program’s identity and a legacy the seniors will leave behind.
Roberts Sets Apollo’s Career Assists Record
Roberts’ record-setting performance added another milestone to Apollo’s championship night. Her 30 assists against Daviess County helped power the Eagles’ balanced attack and marked a new record for career assists in Apollo volleyball history.
The milestone reflects the importance of a setter who connects the entire offense. Apollo’s ability to distribute the ball to Gray, Wettstain, Denson, Lawson and other attackers was central to its performance.
The Eagles also received contributions across the defensive side. Pate led Apollo with 22 digs, while Wettstain added six. Gray recorded seven digs, and Lyla Fortener finished with six. Mason and Roberts each had four digs, with Addy Kirby adding two.
The combined effort helped Apollo finish the regional tournament with another championship and gave the team several accomplishments to carry into the next stage of the postseason.
Seven Players Earn All-Tournament Honors
The 2026 Region 3 Volleyball All-Tournament Team also recognized players from both schools. Three Daviess County players and four Apollo players received plaques for their selections.

Next Stop: The State Tournament
Apollo’s regional championship celebration will be followed by a familiar challenge. The Eagles open the 2026 Girls Volleyball State Tournament against Bowling Green on Monday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. at Apollo High School.
Bowling Green handed Apollo its first loss of the season on Sept. 5, winning a three-set match at a showcase. Howard recalled a physical, closely contested match in which Apollo won the opening set before Bowling Green responded to take the next two.
Both Gray and Howard said the earlier meeting offers useful preparation for the rematch.
Gray believes Apollo is better prepared mentally now than it was early in the season. She said Bowling Green’s aggressive play challenged the Eagles at the time, but the team has grown in its ability to stay composed and compete through each point.
Howard identified aggressive serving and serve receive as important areas for Apollo heading into the state opener. Bowling Green’s serving pressure will require the Eagles to handle the first contact well and give Roberts opportunities to run the offense.
The challenge is significant, but Apollo will have the benefit of playing on its home court.
The Eagles leave the regional championship with a second consecutive title, back-to-back individual honors for Gray and Howard, and a career record for Roberts. Their next match will test whether they can turn that momentum into another postseason win against the opponent that first tested them this season.
