OWENSBORO, KY — The Daviess County Area Middle School City-County Championship brought eight area schools together Thursday evening at Yellow Creek Park, with close races at the front and plenty of strong finishes throughout both fields.

Owensboro Catholic came away with the girls team championship, while Burns took the boys title.

The girls race featured a tight battle for the individual championship. Daviess County’s Evelyann Yeckering crossed first in 15:54.93, holding off Owensboro’s Sydney Main, who finished just 10 seconds behind in 16:04.93. Daviess County’s Bristol Dukes was third at 16:08.15.

Catholic had five runners finish among the top 13, led by Annabelle Patton in fifth. Collins Hancock placed seventh, Emily Wathen eighth, Emma Anderson 11th and Shelby Wathen 13th.

That depth helped the Aces finish with 44 points, followed by Daviess County with 58. Burns finished third with 87, while College View was fourth with 98.

 

The boys race was another close one at the front.

Owensboro’s Harrison Short won the individual championship in 14:20.27, finishing less than two seconds ahead of Daviess County’s Jackson Kirkland. Owensboro’s Mark Whitaker was third in 14:34.63.

Burns answered with a deep group of its own.

Grey Coomes finished fourth, Jackson Owen fifth and Ian Williams seventh. Tucker Story added an eighth-place finish, putting four Burns runners inside the top eight.

Burns finished with 38 points, edging Daviess County, which scored 45. College View placed third with 87 points.

Daviess County also had several strong individual finishes behind Kirkland. Myles Abel finished sixth, followed by Wyatt Lindsey Creamer in ninth and Zane Boswell in 13th.

College View was led by Jaxon Besecker in 10th and Josiah Hathaway in 11th.

The championship was about more than just the team standings. First- and second-place teams in both races received trophies, while the top 12 individual boys and girls finishers earned medals.

For the runners, it made for an evening where individual performances, team depth and a trip to the awards stand all mattered.
