Ganaway Throws Four Touchdowns in Return as Owensboro Rolls Past Muhlenberg County, 48-7

GREENVILLE, KY — Owensboro High School’s offense wasted little time making a statement Friday night. With Demarcus Ganaway Jr. back under center after a collarbone injury, the Red Devils scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, built a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 48-7 road victory over Muhlenberg County.
Ganaway completed 16 of 21 passes for 200 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, leading an Owensboro offense that finished with 249 total yards. The Red Devils also made their presence felt on defense, forcing two interceptions and turning the final play of the game into one more touchdown.
Ganaway Leads First-Quarter Surge
Owensboro set the tone on its opening possession. Ganaway connected with Kingston Dillard for an 11-yard touchdown, giving the Red Devils a 7-0 lead with 9:55 remaining in the first quarter.
Just over two minutes later, Ganaway found Ayden Fountain for a 49-yard touchdown. The connection stretched the lead to 14-0 and gave Owensboro a quick answer to any chance of a Muhlenberg County response.
The Red Devils struck again late in the quarter. After converting a fourth-and-seven with a pass to Jauleon Bryant, Owensboro moved into scoring position, and Ganaway hit Tre Shemwell for a 28-yard touchdown with 2:22 left.
Three touchdown passes. Three successful extra points. A 21-0 lead before the first quarter was over.
Muhlenberg County struggled to find room early. Owensboro’s defense repeatedly forced the Mustangs into difficult down-and-distance situations, and the hosts were unable to turn their first-quarter possessions into points.
Red Devils Keep Building the Lead
Owensboro continued its scoring pace in the second quarter.
Ganaway connected with Chris Coy for 17 yards before Tee Green helped move the ball inside the five-yard line. Green finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 28-0 with 9:45 remaining in the half.
The Red Devils soon got another opportunity near the goal line when Klay Wilken lost a fumble that Mikai Kindle recovered for Owensboro at the Muhlenberg County 2-yard line. After several penalties complicated the short field, Ganaway found Adyson Thomas for a 4-yard touchdown with 6:10 left in the quarter.
Owensboro took a 35-0 advantage into halftime, having scored on five of its first six touchdowns-producing possessions.
Muhlenberg County showed a glimpse of its passing game when Wilken connected with Cooper Carver for 23 yards, but the drive ended with Kahlil Shemwell intercepting a deep pass at the Owensboro 25-yard line.
Defense Delivers the Final Statement
The third quarter featured fewer possessions and just one score. Owensboro quarterback Tyson Biggs connected with Coy for 17 yards, and Kindle followed with a 15-yard run to put the Red Devils near the goal line. Deagan Howard finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, making it 42-0 with 2:03 remaining in the quarter.
Muhlenberg County continued to work for an offensive breakthrough and found it in the fourth quarter. Daylen Hocker broke free for a 24-yard run, Wilken completed a 19-yard pass to Abram Eaves, and Hocker added another 22-yard carry to move the Mustangs inside the Owensboro 10.
Hocker capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run at the 4:04 mark. Ethan Jones converted the extra point, putting Muhlenberg County on the scoreboard at 42-7.
The Mustangs then recovered their onside kick and put together another late drive. Kade Tippett ran for 29 yards, and Wilken added gains of five and 17 yards to bring Muhlenberg County to the Owensboro 2-yard line.
But the final play belonged to the Red Devils.
Wilken’s short pass was intercepted by Nolan Basham at the Owensboro 1-yard line. Basham returned it 99 yards for a touchdown as time expired. The extra point was unsuccessful, leaving the final score at 48-7.
It was a fitting finish for an Owensboro team that paired an efficient passing attack with timely takeaways. The Red Devils finished with 217 passing yards and 32 rushing yards, while the defense recorded two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Owensboro Moves to 6-2
Ganaway’s return provided the headline performance, but the scoring was spread across the offense. Dillard caught four passes for 50 yards and a touchdown, Fountain added 51 yards and a score on two receptions, and Shemwell finished with three catches for 47 yards and a touchdown.
Green led Owensboro’s rushing production with 25 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Kindle added 18 yards on two attempts, and Howard scored on his only carry.
For Muhlenberg County, Hocker led the ground game with 55 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. The Mustangs totaled 176 yards of offense, including 119 rushing yards, but two interceptions and the lost fumble limited their opportunities.
Owensboro improved to 6-2 with the win and will return home next Friday to face Madisonville-North Hopkins at 7 p.m. at Rash Stadium.
Muhlenberg County, which entered the game at 5-2, will look to rebound Thursday, Oct. 22, against Graves County at 7 p.m.
