Matt Bartsch Sets the Pace at Sutton Derby Day 5K in Owensboro

Matt Bartsch (Evansville, IN) takes first place at the Sutton Derby Day 5K in 18:37.4.

Close to 200 runners filled the streets around Sutton Elementary on Saturday morning, turning the surrounding neighborhood into a steady stream of racers for the annual Sutton Derby Day 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run.

The race started and finished at the school, but most of the action played out through the nearby neighborhood, where runners settled into their pace early. By the time the field stretched out, Matt Bartsch of Evansville had already separated himself.

Bartsch crossed the line first in 18:37.4, setting the top mark of the day. Phillip Page followed as the top local finisher at 21:07.5, with Matthew Allen close behind in 22:04.1.

The 5K remained competitive behind the leader, while the 1-mile fun run brought in a mix of runners and walkers just minutes later. Once across the finish line, participants gathered outside the school, where water, pizza, and bananas were waiting as runners cooled down and compared times.

After the races wrapped, the crowd moved inside the gym for awards, where top finishers across multiple age groups were recognized. The event continues to be a consistent Derby weekend tradition in Owensboro, drawing both competitive runners and community participants each year.

One of the more noticeable moments came at the finish line, where school leadership and volunteers helped create a steady, encouraging flow of runners coming through to the end.
