Owensboro YMCA BBQ 5K Brings Runners, Crowds, and Festival Energy to Downtown During BBQ & Barrels Weekend

Downtown Owensboro was filled with runners, festival crowds, music, and the smell of barbecue Saturday morning as 416 participants took part in the Owensboro YMCA BBQ 5K during the annual BBQ & Barrels Festival weekend.

Under sunny skies and warm temperatures, runners started and finished near the heart of the festival as a DJ played music and vendors prepared for one of Owensboro’s biggest weekends of the year. While rain has become a familiar part of past BBQ & Barrels weekends, this year’s event brought clear weather and packed downtown streets throughout the morning.

In the men’s race, Lucca Neves narrowly captured the overall title with a winning time of 15:54.8. Neves edged out Kyle Embry by less than a second in one of the closest finishes of the morning, as Embry crossed at 15:55.7. Cory Kleinjan rounded out the top three overall male finishers with a time of 16:22.0.

The women’s division also featured a strong field led by Lauren Minor, who finished first overall among female runners with a time of 18:26.3. Makenzie Ross finished second at 18:35.8, giving Owensboro another top local performance on the morning. Bretnea Harvey placed third overall among women with a time of 20:31.0.

Beyond the competition, the event carried the atmosphere of a full community celebration. Families lined downtown streets as runners crossed the finish line and festival activity continued to build throughout the morning. Visitors from Owensboro and surrounding communities filled the downtown riverfront area as food trucks, vendors, carnival attractions from Casey’s Rides, and live music created a packed festival atmosphere throughout the day.

The BBQ & Barrels Festival, traditionally held on Mother’s Day weekend, once again showcased many of Owensboro’s signature foods, including burgoo, mutton barbecue, and a wide variety of local food offerings. The festival weekend also featured free outdoor entertainment, including a Saturday evening concert headlined by Chase Matthew on the Owensboro Racing & Gaming Main Stage, along with performances from local and regional acts throughout the weekend.

By late morning, downtown Owensboro had fully shifted from race mode into festival mode as runners, families, and visitors spread throughout the area to enjoy the rest of the weekend festivities. From competitive runners chasing fast times to families exploring food vendors, concerts, and carnival attractions, the event once again showed how sports and community gatherings continue to bring people together in Owensboro.
