Owensboro players surround Peter Mbayo as they celebrate his record-breaking night after he became the program’s all-time leading scorer.

OWENSBORO, KY — Peter Mbayo made Owensboro soccer history Thursday night, and he did it in front of the player whose record had stood for 37 years.

The junior scored twice as Owensboro shut out Owensboro Catholic 6-0 in a district matchup at the Owensboro High School Athletic Complex. His first-half goal helped the Devils build a lead, while his second brought him to 72 career goals — passing Scott Pulliam’s previous school record of 70, set in 1989.

Pulliam was in attendance as Owensboro honored both players for their accomplishments.

The milestone came on a night that also celebrated Owensboro’s seniors. After the match, the team held a gathering outside the field, with food and remarks from the coach recognizing the seniors.

On the field, Owensboro controlled much of the play, keeping the ball in its attacking end for long stretches and building a three-goal advantage before halftime.

Mbayo opened the scoring at 18:48, finishing a pass from junior Miles Morrison. Less than three minutes later, sophomore Avidael Diaz Mazariegos set up Bilombele Ekyochi to make it 2-0.

Senior Kennedy Payne added the third goal at 4:25, finishing a pass from Mbayo to send Owensboro into halftime with a commanding lead.

The Devils added three more goals after the break. Freshman Musa Iddi scored off an assist from freshman Japheti Bavento, then Mbayo found the net again on a free kick.

Senior goalkeeper Kaleb Davison also scored as Owensboro completed the 6-0 result.

Mbayo’s record-breaking night added another milestone to an already productive season. The junior has scored 23 goals this season, putting him within reach of Pulliam’s single-season school record of 36. He also ranks seventh in school history with 31 career assists, with 49 points separating him from the next mark on that list.

Owensboro improves to 11-1-1 with the win, while Catholic moves to 5-7.

The Devils travel to Louisville Collegiate on Saturday, Sept. 19, for a 7 p.m. match at Collegiate Turf Field Stadium. Owensboro Catholic hosts Todd County Central that day at noon.
