The postseason stage is set for the No. 10-ranked Owensboro Catholic High School baseball team after the Aces powered past Daviess County High School 10-4 in the opening round of the 9th District Tournament on Sunday at the Owensboro High School Athletic Complex.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Owensboro Catholic flipped the game quickly and decisively, erupting for six runs in the second inning and never surrendering control again.
Barrett Evans set the tone at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, double, and single while driving multiple scoring opportunities throughout the night. He was at the center of nearly every major Catholic rally.
The Aces’ second-inning surge came in waves. A sacrifice fly from Mason Moser brought in the first run before Evans ripped an RBI triple to ignite the lineup. Alex Hood followed with a two-run single, and Mason Russelburg added another RBI hit as Catholic turned a tight start into a commanding lead.
Owensboro Catholic kept the pressure on in the third, extending the advantage behind another sacrifice fly from Evans and a two-run double from Jake Murphy, pushing the score to 9-2.
While the offense delivered the knockout punch, Jaxson White stabilized things on the mound after early damage. White worked into the sixth inning, allowing three earned runs while striking out three to earn the win. Gentry Atwell closed out the final innings to secure the victory.
Daviess County briefly jumped ahead early after capitalizing on a first-inning error, but the Panthers were unable to contain Catholic’s lineup once it settled in. Caden Embry led Daviess County offensively, finishing 2-for-4, while the Panthers played clean defensively with no errors in the field.
With the win, Owensboro Catholic advances to the 9th District championship game, where they will face Apollo High School as the Aces continue their push toward region play.
