Daviess County Pulls Away From Apollo With Five-Goal District Win

OWENSBORO, KY — Daviess County turned a close opening half into a five-goal district victory Thursday night, scoring four times in the second half to defeat Apollo 5-0 at Deer Park Elementary Field.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Ethan Dailey followed up on a blocked shot and finished the loose ball inside the six-yard box.
Apollo kept the deficit at one through halftime, but Daviess County found another gear after the break.
Austin Spurrier doubled the lead in the 45th minute, striking a volley off a deflection from a cross. Silas Goebel provided the assist.
Just a minute later, Goebel helped create another goal, sending a through ball to Atley Thompson, who made a run behind the Apollo defense before cutting the ball onto his left foot and finishing to make it 3-0.
Dailey added his second goal of the night in the 48th minute, coming through a scramble in front of goal and sliding the ball past the keeper. Spurrier was credited with the assist.
The Panthers completed the scoring in the 54th minute when Spurrier recorded his first varsity assist, setting up senior Graham Robinson for his 10th goal of the season.
Daviess County also recorded a combined clean sheet from junior goalkeepers Cooper Payne and Harrison Diprossimo-Dunaway.
The match was also part of Daviess County’s JG Day, honoring Jason Goddard, a former Panthers coach, Owensboro Police Department officer and DCPS officer. First responders and DCPS employees were admitted free as the program recognized Goddard and his connection to the school and community.
The win moves Daviess County to 10-3-2 on the season and closes out its district schedule. Apollo falls to 6-6-1.
Daviess County hosts Elizabethtown on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. at Deer Park Elementary Field. Apollo travels to Central Hardin on Sept. 19 for a 4 p.m. match.
