Run for Foxy Roxie Draws Strong Crowd to Downtown Owensboro

A beautiful morning along the riverfront set the stage for the 4th annual Run for Foxy Roxie on Saturday in downtown Owensboro.

Participants gathered at Smothers Park for a morning of fitness, remembrance, and community support. The event featured a 5K race, a 1-mile walk/run, and a Kids Dash that attracted a large number of young participants eager to cross the finish line.

The Run for Foxy Roxie was created to honor the memory of Roxanne “Foxy Roxie” Pickrell, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 13 after a battle with brain cancer. Through the Roxanne Pickrell Memorial Fund, the event continues to support local causes and organizations throughout the Owensboro community.

This year’s race started and finished along the downtown riverfront, with runners making their way through portions of the city before returning to the finish line. Following the races, participants gathered for the awards ceremony as organizers recognized top finishers and celebrated another successful event.

The overall male winners in the 5K were:
1. Austin Cavender (27) – 18:34
2. Maurice Hanley (30) – 20:36
3. Phillip Page (45) – 21:44

The overall female winners were:
1. Jennifer Tomblinson (52) – 28:02
2. Kay Peach (50) – 28:46
3. Krystal Williams (38) – 29:10

One of the highlights of the morning was the Kids Dash, which saw a strong turnout and plenty of excitement from the youngest participants.

Event organizer Cathy Pickrell welcomed participants and supporters throughout the morning. Her dedication to honoring Roxie’s memory while helping local organizations continues to make the event a meaningful tradition in Owensboro.

Proceeds from this year’s race will benefit the Owensboro Fire Department Hose Handlers as they prepare for the upcoming Puzzle Pieces Lip Sync Battle.

With favorable weather, strong participation, and a positive atmosphere from start to finish, the 2026 Run for Foxy Roxie once again proved to be a successful community event on the Owensboro riverfront.

Apollo Sends Both Baseball and Softball to State After Regional Championship Wins

For most schools, sending one team to the state tournament is a season-defining accomplishment.

On Thursday night, Apollo High School did it twice.

Both the Apollo baseball and softball teams captured regional championships and earned trips to the KHSAA State Tournament, capping off a massive night for Apollo athletics.

The Eagles baseball team battled past Meade County 3-1 behind a dominant pitching performance from Ross Milburn, while the Apollo softball team edged Daviess County 2-1 behind a complete-game effort from Mollie Julian.

Two regional titles. Two state tournament appearances. One big night for Apollo athletics.

Baseball: Milburn Leads Apollo Past Meade County

Apollo baseball set the tone early and then leaned on pitching and defense the rest of the way to secure a 3-1 win over Meade County in the regional championship.

The Eagles jumped out quickly in the first inning, scoring all three of their runs. Jackson Carder drove in the opening run with an RBI single, and Jagger Pate added another RBI hit as Apollo capitalized on early opportunities to build a lead.

From there, Ross Milburn took control.

Milburn worked deep into the game, allowing just one run on six hits across 6.2 innings while striking out six and walking none. He consistently limited damage and kept Meade County from ever fully breaking through.

Apollo’s defense backed him with steady execution, including a key double play that helped preserve the lead as Meade County continued to threaten.

Ryleigh Logan led the offense with two hits, helping set the table in a game where early runs proved critical.

Once Apollo grabbed control in the first inning, they never let it go.

Softball: Julian Delivers in Tight Win Over Daviess County

Apollo softball followed a similar script: early offense, strong pitching, and steady defense in a 2-1 win over Daviess County.

The Eagles struck first in the second inning when Tyler Hall hit a solo home run to right field, giving Apollo a 1-0 lead and immediate momentum.

Apollo added another run in the third inning after Keelan Wettstain grounded into a fielder’s choice, bringing home Reice Coomes to extend the lead to 2-0.

That was all Mollie Julian needed in the circle.

Julian delivered a complete-game performance, allowing four hits and one run across seven innings while striking out eight and walking two. She worked through pressure situations and consistently limited Daviess County’s chances.

Daviess County cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning, but Apollo responded with clean defense and timely outs the rest of the way.

Arianna Ramirez led the offense with two hits in three at-bats from the leadoff spot, while Hall and Wettstain each drove in a run. Apollo also played a clean defensive game, finishing without an error.

Two Wins, One Night

Both games followed a similar formula: early execution, strong pitching, and defense under pressure.

What matters most is the outcome — two regional championships on the same night, and both teams moving on to the state tournament.

Now both Apollo baseball and softball head into the next round with momentum, confidence, and a clear standard set on the same field of pressure.

Apollo Rolls Past Hancock County, Advances to 3rd Region Championship Game Against Daviess County

Apollo punched its ticket to the next round of the 3rd Region Tournament on Tuesday with a dominant 13-0 win over Hancock County.

The Eagles controlled the game from the start and exploded offensively with 15 hits, including six runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth to end the game early.

Apollo first broke through in the second inning when Hannah Holder stole home to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Tyler Hall extended the advantage in the third with an RBI double to center field.

The Eagles put the game away in the fourth inning. Arianna Ramirez delivered the biggest hit of the night with a three-run home run to center field, while Hall and Liza Page each added RBI hits during the six-run frame.

Apollo continued the pressure in the fifth inning behind RBI singles from Keelan Wettstain, Hall, and Page. Holder added another sacrifice fly as the Eagles stretched the lead to 13-0.

Hall led Apollo at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with multiple doubles and three RBIs. Wettstain, Page, and Emersyn Bullington each recorded multiple hits in the win.

Inside the circle, Mollie Julian was dominant, allowing just two hits across four scoreless innings while striking out three. Apollo’s defense also played clean softball, finishing the game without committing an error.

One of the more exciting moments came during a rundown between third base and home involving Holder, helping keep the Eagles’ aggressive baserunning pressure on Hancock County throughout the game.

With the win, Apollo advances to tonight’s 3rd Region championship game against Daviess County. The winner will earn a trip to the KHSAA State Tournament.

Owensboro Catholic Rolls Past Muhlenberg County in Regional Opener

The Owensboro Catholic Aces Baseball wasted little time taking control Monday night, pulling away with a dominant 11-1 victory over the Muhlenberg County Mustangs Baseball in regional tournament action.

After two scoreless innings, the Aces erupted in the bottom of the third and never looked back.

Owensboro Catholic strung together four consecutive singles to open the scoring, beginning with Tucker Evans’ RBI base hit that plated Jude Evans for the game’s first run. Mason Moser followed with an RBI single before Jake Murphy and Jaxson White each delivered run-scoring hits as the Aces exploded for five runs in the inning.

The offensive pressure continued in the fourth.

Jake Murphy drove in another run with a sacrifice fly, White added an RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Mason Russelburg lined a two-run single to center field to stretch the lead to 9-1.

Owensboro Catholic finished the game with 11 runs despite recording only eight hits, taking advantage of walks, hit batters, aggressive baserunning, and multiple Muhlenberg County defensive errors.

White dominated both on the mound and at the plate. The right-hander earned the win after throwing three hitless innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Offensively, he went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Tucker Evans also collected two hits and drove in a run, while Murphy, Moser, and Russelburg each delivered key RBIs during the middle innings.

Muhlenberg County’s lone run came in the fourth inning when Kade Tippett singled home Carver Rice, but the Mustangs struggled to generate offense consistently against Owensboro Catholic pitching.

Gentry Atwell added a strong relief appearance for the Aces, striking out two over a scoreless inning while allowing no hits.

Owensboro Catholic capped the scoring in the sixth inning, pushing the lead to 11-1 and securing the mercy-rule victory to advance deeper into regional tournament play.

Hancock’s Two-Homer Night Powers Daviess County Into Regional Semifinals

The bats came alive early and never slowed down for the Daviess County Panthers Softball on Monday night.

Behind a massive performance from Molly Hancock, Daviess County overwhelmed Edmonson County Lady Cats Softball 18-2 in four innings during the opening round of the regional tournament.

Hancock delivered one of the biggest offensive performances of the postseason so far, blasting two home runs and driving in six runs. The senior slugger launched a two-run homer in the second inning before ending the night with a grand slam during Daviess County’s explosive eight-run fourth inning.

The Panthers wasted no time taking control.

Annie Newman opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run home run to center field, giving Daviess County an early 2-0 advantage. One inning later, the Panthers erupted for five more runs as Lilah Morris drove in a run with a single before Kylie Clark crushed a two-run homer to left field. Hancock followed immediately with another two-run blast to push the lead to 7-0.

Daviess County continued piling on in the third inning. Clark added an RBI single while Shelby Bennett brought home another run on a groundout as the Panthers stretched the lead to 10-0.

Edmonson County briefly answered in the top of the fourth when K. Williams lined a two-run double to left field, but the Panthers immediately slammed the door shut with their biggest inning of the night.

Daviess County scored eight runs in the bottom half of the fourth, highlighted by RBI hits from Storey Hume and Kyla Zembrycki before Hancock crushed a grand slam to center field to cap the scoring at 18-2.

The Panthers finished with 13 hits while also turning two double plays defensively.

Clark collected multiple hits and finished with four RBIs, while Morris also added multiple hits in the dominant offensive showing. Newman reached base multiple times and scored throughout the night from the leadoff spot.

Sophia Cain earned the win in the circle for Daviess County, allowing two runs over three innings before Hume closed the game with a scoreless relief appearance.

With the victory, Daviess County advances deeper into regional tournament play after one of its most complete performances of the season.

Apollo Advances Behind Julian’s Dominance in Regional Opener

The postseason started exactly how the Apollo Eagles Softball wanted Monday night.

Behind a complete-game performance from Mollie Julian and a relentless offensive attack led by Emersyn Bullington, Apollo rolled past Trinity Lady Raiders Softball 5-1 in the opening round of the regional tournament.

Julian controlled the game from the circle from the opening inning, striking out 10 batters while allowing just one run on five hits across seven innings. She didn’t issue a single walk and repeatedly shut down Trinity rallies before they could build momentum.

Apollo wasted no time setting the tone offensively.

After loading the bases in the top of the first, the Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead when a wild pitch allowed Emersyn Bullington to score. Apollo kept the pressure on in the second inning as Arianna Ramirez ripped an RBI double down the left field line before Bullington followed with another RBI single to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Bullington was nearly unstoppable at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Ramirez added two doubles and two RBIs of her own, giving Apollo’s lineup a dangerous one-two punch all night long.

Trinity answered in the bottom of the third when Kendall Howard delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Julian immediately regained control. The Apollo senior struck out six batters over the next four innings and stranded multiple runners in scoring position to keep Trinity from mounting a comeback.

The Eagles added insurance runs in the sixth inning after another RBI double from Ramirez and Bullington’s fourth hit of the night pushed the lead to 5-1.

Tyler Hall added two hits for Apollo as the Eagles collected 10 total hits in the win.

Despite the loss, Trinity pitcher Ella Morris battled through seven innings while striking out 13 hitters. Avary Emmick led the Lady Raiders offensively with two hits.

With the win, Apollo moves on in regional tournament play carrying momentum from a balanced performance that featured dominant pitching, timely hitting, and aggressive baserunning from the first inning forward.

Aces Edge Apollo in Pitcher’s Duel to Claim 9th District Championship

The margin was razor-thin, the tension never let up, and in the end, it was the smallest of openings that decided everything.

The No. 10-ranked Owensboro Catholic High School baseball team claimed the 9th District championship Tuesday night, outlasting Apollo High School 2-1 in a classic pitcher’s duel at the Owensboro High School Athletic Complex.

Both teams punched their ticket to the 3rd Region Tournament, but only one walked away with hardware.

From the first inning, it was clear runs would be at a premium. Apollo starter Gage Logsdon and Catholic’s Lane Hundley locked in early, trading zeroes and controlling contact with minimal damage.

Hundley set the tone for Catholic, working into the fifth inning while allowing just one hit and striking out five. Apollo never found consistent rhythm against him, with early double-play balls killing momentum and limiting traffic on the bases.

Logsdon matched him step for step through the early innings, keeping Catholic off the board through three frames before the Aces finally broke through.

The breakthrough came in the fourth.

Alex Hood delivered the decisive swing, lining a single that brought home the game’s first run and gave Catholic a 1-0 edge in a game where every run felt amplified.

Catholic added a key insurance run in the fifth when Mason Moser grounded out to score Mason Russelburg, pushing the lead to 2-0 and shifting pressure entirely onto Apollo’s final at-bats.

Apollo refused to go quietly.

In the final inning, the Eagles loaded the bases and clawed a run across on a walk to Gunnar Hendricks, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and bringing the winning run to the plate.

But Catholic’s bullpen and defense held firm under pressure. Cal Murphy entered in relief and delivered in a moment built for nerves, working through chaos—including a game delay caused by a stadium lighting issue—to shut the door with the tying and winning runs in scoring position.

Murphy finished the job, preserving the one-run lead and sealing the district title.

Offensively, Mason Russelburg led Catholic with a perfect 2-for-2 performance, while Hood and Moser each drove in a run in a game defined more by execution than volume.

Defensively, both teams were sharp. Neither committed an error, and Apollo turned two double plays to keep itself within striking distance all night.

Apollo starter Logsdon kept the Eagles alive deep into the game, allowing just one run over 3.1 innings, while Catholic leaned on a pitching-by-committee approach to close out the win.

In the end, it wasn’t power or big innings that decided the 9th District—it was timing, execution, and one breakthrough swing in the fourth inning.

And that was enough for Catholic to take the crown.

Julian Deals, Apollo Shuts Out Catholic to Punch Ticket to District Title Game

The postseason run continues for the Apollo High School softball team, which punched its way into the 9th District championship with a 4-0 shutout win over Owensboro Catholic High School on Monday, powered by a dominant two-way performance from Mollie Julian.

In a game delayed and stretched across two days, Apollo stayed locked in while Catholic couldn’t break through against elite pitching.

Julian controlled the game from the circle, striking out 10 over seven shutout innings while allowing just four hits and working out of the game’s only real threat without damage. When Catholic loaded the bases in the sixth inning, she shut the door with back-to-back outs to preserve the clean sheet.

But she didn’t just dominate in the circle—she decided the game at the plate too.

Julian finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a key double that helped Apollo break open the scoring and set the tone early.

Apollo struck first in the second inning when Julian doubled in the game’s opening run. The Eagles added separation in the third, stringing together patient at-bats and timely contact. Tyler Hall delivered an RBI single, Liza Page worked a walk that forced in a run, and Julian followed again with an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0.

That was more than enough support.

While Catholic starter Ava Mudd kept the Lady Aces within striking distance early—striking out six over six innings—the offense never found rhythm against Julian’s command and Apollo’s clean defense.

Owensboro Catholic finished with just four hits, with Lily Logsdon, Raegan Leach, Taylor Clark, and Mudd each recording one. The Lady Aces’ best opportunity came in the sixth, but they were turned away empty-handed.

Apollo’s defense matched the pitching effort, playing error-free softball and turning a double play to erase any chance of momentum swings.

With the win, Apollo advances to the 9th District championship game, continuing a season that now includes a return to the district final stage for the first time since 2019 and a guaranteed spot in the 3rd Region Tournament.

Now the focus shifts to a rematch with Daviess County, but this time with a championship on the line.
